At any Scout group there are a core set of roles that need to be filled by volunteers to allow the group to run. Such roles include enough leaders for each section, treasurers and secretary.
Our current available roles:
Assistant Beaver Leader Role
Monday Evenings
The Beavers are 6 to 8 years old, so we are definitely looking for someone with lots of energy with this section!
As an assistant to the Beaver leader, you won't be suddenly taking on a whole group of children by yourself. The role of the assistant leader is just that; to assist. You'll work with the leader to plan nights, activities, games and help to run them. You will often be communicating with the parents about upcoming events, and helping to keep admin such as the register and records of payments.
If you are a young person looking at working in a nursery or primary school environment in the future, working with the Beavers offers invaluable first hand experience. You'll be gaining skills in leadership, communication and organisation whilst having fun and meeting new people.
You won't be thrown straight in the deep end if you volunteer to become a leader, and we know that everyone comes from different levels of experience. For this reason, along with the support of other leaders, you will be given free leader training that will teach you everything about Scouting and leading to get to you on your way.
Beaver nights run weekly on Monday Nights during school term time, and we have the same half terms and holidays as schools. The evenings themselves are an hour and a half, and there will be some planning meetings and events outside of that time.
Group Secretary
Organisation and Communication
This one is a little more of a behind the scenes role, and is integral to the running of the group across all sections. Rather than a practical role running the evenings with the Scouts, the group secretary works with the Chairman and is secretary to the Group Scout Council.
Your role will include keeping a commanding watch over documents at the hut, making sure that information is correct, up to date and stored securely. You will be involved organising fundraising events and help communication in the group, from making sure emails get to the right people to helping the sections communicate. Basically, we're looking for someone with a total love of communication and organisation!
You'll be involved in the group's activities and the group secretary is an extremely important role in making sure everyone is working together.
As this role does not require you to work directly with children, you will not need any official training. However, that doesn't mean you're going to be immediately thrown in and expected to hit the ground running from day one.
We're always happy to work with new volunteers, support them in their role as they learn and be as helpful as we can. All you need is enthusiasm and to be ready to get started!
There are no particular required hours as what needs doing can vary so much between weeks or months. The only specific times you will need to be in attendance are at group or district meetings - your role as secretary means that it will be important for you to be involved.
Assistant Beaver Leader
Group Secretary
Can't do every week? If you still want to volunteer but you don't think you can commit to every week, you can do every other week, a few times a term, or whatever suits you. We're flexible!
There are so many ways to get involved in Scouting, and the best part is that you can volunteer as much, or as little, as you like!
There are official roles within 1st Crownhill Scout Group from admin roles behind the scenes to active leader roles running the nights and camps.
But you can also get involved by bringing your own knowledge and experience along to one of our evenings or events and running an activity. Everyone who runs Scouting is a volunteer, and we always appreciate people getting involved and helping us to provide the best we can for the children and young adults at 1st Crownhill.
We want all the children at 1st Crownhill to have fun, make friends, learn new skills and build memories that will last a lifetime, and that is all down to the volunteers.
As a volunteer, you'll become an integral part of our Scout community and helping us to provide all sorts of fun and games for the children.
If you decide to become a leader or assistant leader, you'll be able to come camping and hiking with your group, learn traditional and new Scout skills and take part in all sorts of fun days and activities.
Behind the scenes includes event organisation and fundraising, something which is extremely important to allow our group to continue - Scouting is a charity organisation, and runs entirely on donations and subs, and running successful fundraising events is as important as running the nights themselves.
You'll reach a network of like-minded people with a sense of adventure and find new opportunities to learn, have fun and to give back to the community through the children at 1st Crownhill.

Your role will include keeping a commanding watch over documents at the hut, making sure that information is correct, up to date and stored securely. You will often be heavily involved in the organisation of fundraising and be a centre for channels of communication in the group, including making sure emails get to the right people and all the leaders are sharing information that needs sharing.
Basically, we're looking for someone with an almost unhealthy love of communication and organisation!
You'll be involved in the group's activities in a less practical way, but the group secretary is definitely an extremely important role in making sure everyone is working together.
As this role does not require you to work directly with children, you will not need any official training. However, that doesn't mean you're going to be immediately thrown in and expected to get going and know what you're doing from day one.
We're always happy to work with new volunteers, support them in their role as they learn and be as helpful as we can. All you need is enthusiasm and to be ready to get started!
